Parasailing

What is parasailing?

How did parasailing begun?

History of parasailing begun in the 60′s when Piere Lamoigne attached already existing parachute to a car. That was a cheaper way to teach parachuters, they would raise them at the certain height and then they would let them free. That method was called parascending. In the middle of 1961, pioneer parachute company started making parachutes under protected name parasail.
At the beginning of 70′s Mark McCulloh set the higest standars in parasailing. He was the first one to start commercialy used parachutes at the sea. At the beginning raising parasails was done from the schore and then from the specialy made platforms.
1972 he desinged first motorize platform.
1974 he designed first winch boat, ship with special winch that helps pulling the parachute back to the ship, that change the history of parasail.
The greatest invetion in parasailing was specially designed ship which had built in platform for take off and landing of the flyer.

Types and ways of parasailing
Today we use three types to start parasailing
• start from the shore where flyer makes couple of steps before parachute lifts him up. The landing is usually done in the water.
• from platform to the sea (this could be motorized) where start is the same from the shore but it’s possible to land on the platform
• From the platform of the ship it’s the most used and it’s the safest way. Parachuter sits on the platform and it’s hooked up by the “open-ready” parachute. After that with a help of the special winch it lafts and lands on the ship. There are several ways that helps the flyer to be tied up to parachute.
• single harness – it is the most common employed, used as a seat for one person
• double harness – two persons together, one in the front of other
• tandem bar harness – a metal bar, which is hooked to the seats, one next to the other, possible to the three people
• skyrider chair – special seats for more persons

Parasailing under strong wind
Parasailing under strong wind is always controversial subject for skippers who close eyes in front of security and they prepare for last ride despite of risk, while equipment manufacturers try to produce as small parachutes as they can to enrich their offer. Profit encouraged risks have pushed parasailing into dangerous zone.

Main rules
“Flight” under constant wind larger then 24 km/h (4 bophors) should be avoided even if you think risk is less with smaller traffic on the sea around you or if you are far from coast.

When the wind is too strong
As a main rule, it’s considered: passenger’s weight, boat size, parachute size, number of boats close to you and distance from the coast.
The wind is too strong when passenger is in the air and boat stays on the spot or it’s slightly pulled backwards, and the front part of the ship points against the wind.
